Dixie and I have been together for almost fourteen years – a
long time. We got her when she was only eight -weeks old from our local SPCA. My
wife and I adopted her and her sister from a litter of six beautiful little pups.
Dixie is a mixture of Australian Shepherd and Blue Heeler, two good breeds of
dogs known for their herding cattle or sheep skills. These dogs are very
intelligent and make wonderful companions. They love the outdoors and enjoy a
good romp in the woods with their owners.
When my wife and I visited our local SPCA fourteen years ago,
to adopt a new puppy to replace our last great dog we had to put down. The kind
person at the SPCA put us outside in their yard with six little puppies, all
from the same litter. We sat in the grass and got mauled (in a good way) by all
these little wannabe foster-companions! “Take me home mommy and daddy!” they all
enthusiastically seem to beg. Well, we each picked one, or should I say, these two
picked us! We named them Dixie and Chix. Chix chose Sally, my wife, and Dixie
chose me. It was love at first sight!
Dixie and I, now in our senior years, share a lot of what
older, good friends share; morning walks, rides to the store in the truck, our afternoon
naps, and those middle of the night trips to the bathroom (yard.) We don’t get
in a big hurry to do anything anymore. In fact, we do everything a little
slower now. We can be funny about what we want to eat. Sometimes we eat a lot,
other times, all we want is a nice, little snack. Sitting in our recliner on
the back porch, in the afternoon, watching the squirrels chase each other, and
the deer come in for the corn, we threw down is one of our favorite things. We
enjoy times like this.
We are both old dogs now. We can’t do all the things we used
to could do but that’s alright! Our old joints cause us some difficulties and
we don’t get up and run like we used to either. We think harder about our have-to-dos
now – we focus more on our quality time. It’s what us old dogs do! Life is
good.
Dixie and me, we’re just taking it easy and enjoying our
retirement. Growing old together…just a couple of old dogs, doing what old dogs
do, and that’s okay!
